DigiCert research links certificate failures to costly outages

0

DigiCert has released research warning that certificate-related outages can carry significant financial and operational impact for organisations, with a portion of respondents reporting incidents costing more than US$250,000.

In a note circulated to media by PR agency MSL Group, the company said its research found nearly one in four organisations reported their most significant certificate incident exceeded US$250,000. It also said more than a third experienced outages caused by expired certificates.

The outreach highlighted the growing challenge of certificate management as certificate lifecycles shorten, arguing that increased complexity can raise the risk of unexpected downtime, operational disruption and infrastructure incidents.

The communication offered interviews with James Cook, DigiCert’s APAC head, to discuss the findings and “practical steps enterprises can take” to prepare for shorter certificate lifecycles.

Certificate management has been under increasing scrutiny as organisations rely more heavily on TLS certificates and machine identities across cloud services, APIs and internal systems, making expiry and misconfiguration a recurring source of service disruption.
