Eleven Australian civil security and community protection innovators have been shortlisted for the inaugural CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Awards.
Finalists include a hand-held jammer designed to immobilise potentially hostile drones; a computer tool designed to predict the outbreak and spread of potentially devastating disease pandemics; and a novel surveillance system that integrates Wi-Fi and cloud storage to provide rapid protection of both remote sites and major public events.
To be presented at the CIVSEC 2018 Civil Security Congress and Exposition in Melbourne on Wednesday 1 May, these are still the only Awards that recognise and reward Australian Innovators in the civil security and community protection fields. Five awards will be presented, including a cash prize worth $15,000.:
- CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Award for Cyber Security
- CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Award for Physical Security & Policing
- CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Award for Disaster Relief, Emergency Management and Humanitarian Services
- CIVSEC 2018 National Innovation Award for Civil Security
- CIVSEC 2018 SME Innovation Grant for Civil Security – worth $15,000
These Awards have been developed by the national not-for-profit foundation, Industry Defence and Security Australia Limited (IDSAL), which presents the biennial CIVSEC 2018 Congress on civil security as well as the biennial Pacific International Maritime Exposition in Sydney and the Land Forces International Exposition in Adelaide. The Awards will be presented by the Chairman of IDSAL, Vice Admiral Chris Ritchie, AO, RAN (Rtd) during CIVSEC 2018, which will be held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) from 1-3 May 2018.
“The awards are aligned with the foundation’s mission to promote the development of Australia’s industry capacity and capability in the humanitarian and security fields,” said IDSAL CEO Ian Honnery.
“Civil security is a very diffuse field that embraces everything from cyber and transport security to policing, border protection, counter-terrorism, disaster relief and emergency management. We want to recognise the skills and expertise that exist within Australia and reward the highly innovative work which is being undertaken by Australian companies and individuals.”

Shortlisted entrants in the categories below are also eligible for the CIVSEC 2018 National Innovation Award for Civil Security and, if they are SMEs, for the CIVSEC 2018 SME Innovation Grant for Civil Security. The CIVSEC 2018 judges will select the winners of these two prestigious awards; all of the CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Awards will be presented at the MECC on Wednesday 2 May at 3.00pm

- Huntsman Security (NSW) – High-speed cyber attack detection and automated threat verification to eliminate false alerts and accelerate threat resolution
CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Award for Physical Security & Policing – Shortlist
- Intelligent Security Integration Australia (VIC) – mobile, Wi-Fi and cloud-enabled surveillance system
- AGICS (QLD) – global, rapid drone incursion reporting tool
CIVSEC 2018 Innovation Award for Disaster Relief, Emergency Management and Humanitarian Services – Shortlist
- DST and University of Melbourne (VIC) – novel methods of surveillance and prediction of disease outbreaks in real-time.
- Zirkarta (ACT) – cloud-based, automatically updated, shared mapping system for fire and emergency services
- OPSTAR Pty Limited (NSW) – Search and rescue and aviation safety system
- Holmwood Highgate (QLD) – Deployable, extremely rugged fuel and water tanks able to be handled by both military and civil container-handling equipment
- Flight Safety Foundation Limited (VIC) – Basic Aviation Risk Program (BARS) for drone Operations Standard

CIVSEC 2018 is an international industry and technology exhibition, strategic summit and congress of specialist conferences and symposia, covering a broad spectrum of civil security, policing, homeland security, border protection, resource and infrastructure protection, emergency management, disaster response and humanitarian assistance.
