Bitwarden has appointed cybersecurity product executive Mary Writz as chief product officer, tasking her with leading product strategy and portfolio development as the company expands its enterprise focus.

Writz has held product leadership roles at Red Canary, Zscaler and ForgeRock, and previously worked at Hewlett Packard and IBM. Her experience includes identity and access management, threat detection, machine learning and security intelligence, according to the company.

“As Bitwarden expands, product strategy, customer insight, and go-to-market execution must operate as a unified system,” said Mike Sullivan, chief executive officer, Bitwarden. “Mary has spent her career translating complex cybersecurity problems into products that work at enterprise scale. Her leadership will help us sharpen product priorities, move faster across the product lifecycle, and meet the demands of our largest customers.”

Bitwarden said Writz will oversee product management, product design, product marketing and strategy for new offerings, and work across engineering, marketing, sales and customer success to guide product investment.

“Access is getting more complex. Security shouldn’t have to,” said Writz. “Employees, developers, applications, and AI agents all need access to critical systems, and security and IT teams need the visibility and control to govern that access without slowing people down. Bitwarden has earned trust by making credential security easy to use. My focus is building on that foundation and expanding what Bitwarden can do for customers.”

The appointment follows recent executive changes at Bitwarden, including Mike Sullivan joining as CEO and Andrew Hartnett as chief technology officer, while founder Kyle Spearrin moved into the role of chief innovation officer.

Bitwarden also said the leadership changes accompany a 50% increase in research and development investment focused on user experience and new security capabilities.
