Cloudflare has announced Adaptive Intelligence, a new bot defence capability built into Cloudflare Bot Management that the company says is designed to continuously learn from live internet traffic and adapt protections in real time.
The launch comes as AI and low-cost online tooling lowers the barrier to automated attacks, including bots that mimic legitimate user behaviour and shift tactics quickly. Cloudflare argues that static or slow-update security models can be repeatedly tested by attackers, while a system that changes rules more frequently can make automation harder to sustain at scale.
According to Cloudflare, Adaptive Intelligence retrains its models on live traffic, generates short-lived rules for specific threats, and analyses behaviour over multiple timeframes to detect “low-and-slow” activity such as scraping and distributed bot attacks. It also combines browser-level behaviour signals with Cloudflare Precursor and network telemetry to distinguish malicious automation from legitimate users.
Cloudflare said updates are tested against real traffic before being deployed, with the aim of reducing false positives that could block valid users.
“Building taller walls fails when the cost of scaling an attack is effectively zero. To stop modern bot threats, you have to flip the economics on the attackers. Traditional defenses offer a static target that threat actors can systematically solve. Cloudflare’s Adaptive Intelligence creates a moving target—rendering an attacker’s engineering efforts obsolete before their operation can ever achieve scale,” said Dane Knecht, CTO at Cloudflare.
The company positioned the capability as a response to what it describes as a widening imbalance between attackers’ ability to make repeated, low-cost attempts and defenders’ need to stop every attempt without disrupting legitimate customer traffic.
